How to Arrange a Temporary Stay Permit in China

If you're in between jobs or work visas in China, applying for a Temporary Stay Permit can give you a short legal window (typically 30 days) to stay in the country while preparing your next steps. This is especially helpful if you're transitioning to a new job and need time to process your next Z visa. Usually, your current school’s HR will be well-practiced and able to assist you with the process, but it’s always best to know what to expect and what documents to prepare.

✅ What Is a Temporary Stay Permit?

The Temporary Stay Permit is issued by China’s National Immigration Administration (Exit-Entry Bureau) after your current Z visa and residence permit are canceled. It allows you to stay in China legally for a limited time, usually 30 days.

📋 Documents Required

To qualify, prepare the following documents for submission at your local Exit-Entry Administration Office:

  1. Valid passport

  2. Cancellation certificate from your previous employer (proving your work permit and residence permit have been legally terminated)

  3. Release letter from your employer (证明离职证明)

  4. Original residence permit and visa (still valid at time of application)

  5. Proof of onward plans, such as:

    • A job offer or ongoing application for a new Z visa (e.g., contract, business license of the new employer)

    • Flight bookings or departure plans (if you're preparing to leave China)

  6. Completed visa/stay permit application form

  7. Recent passport photo (typically one 2-inch photo with a white background)

  8. Local registration form of temporary residence (住宿登记表) from the police station where you're living

⚠️ Some cities may require additional documents, such as a written explanation of your reason for staying or a letter of commitment. Always confirm with the local bureau. Your school HR will be able to advise too.

⚠️ Important Things to Know

  • This permit is not extendable. You must leave China or switch to another valid visa before it expires.

  • You cannot legally work while holding a Temporary Stay Permit.

  • Processing time usually takes 5–7 working days.

  • Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or entry bans - apply before your current permit expires.

  • Some cities (like Beijing or Shanghai) may offer more flexibility; others may be stricter.

✅ Pro Tip

Apply immediately after your work permit is canceled, ideally before your residence permit expires. Even a 1-day delay could lead to complications or rejection.
