The New Totally Teach School Tier System For 2026
As an international education recruitment agency, knowing the market isn’t just part of what we do - it’s essential to how we support both schools and teachers successfully.
Every recruitment season gives us fresh insight into what schools are prioritising, where hiring trends are shifting, and what makes candidates stand out in an increasingly competitive international market. Over the past year especially, we’ve seen schools become more specific about qualifications, experience, curriculum background, and long-term fit.
We’ve also taken on board valuable feedback from our teachers and realised that our previous Tier System wasn’t reflecting requirements quite as clearly as we intended.
Therefore, we’re extremely excited to relaunch the Totally Teach Tier System for 2026 - an updated guide designed to give teachers clearer, more transparent insight into where they currently sit in the international school market, and which opportunities they’re most competitive for.
Built from the combined experience of our recruitment team and informed by ongoing conversations with schools across the world, this guide reflects the kinds of profiles schools are most commonly requesting in today’s hiring landscape.
The goal isn’t to label or limit teachers. It’s to help you understand the market more clearly.
International education hiring can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly when different schools have very different expectations.
Our updated system is designed to simplify that process by helping teachers:
Understand which roles they’re currently most competitive for
Understand that the Tier System highlights general, minimum requirements
Recognise what qualifications or experience may strengthen future applications
Approach the job search process with clearer expectations
Make more informed decisions about their next career steps
One of the biggest misconceptions in international recruitment is that there’s a single “perfect” route into great schools. In reality, schools value many different things: teaching licences, curriculum experience, subject specialisms, leadership background, stability, bilingual ability, and cultural fit can all play an important role.
Our updated 2026 guide reflects that reality.
You’ll notice that the Tier System now places greater emphasis on areas schools consistently prioritise, including:
Full teaching licences and recognised qualifications
Years of full-time, in-classroom, formal teaching experience
International curriculum familiarity (IB, British, American and more)
Subject shortage areas
At the same time, we also want to emphasise something equally important: great teachers exist at every level of experience.
To us, talent is what counts. The final hiring call always rests with each school, and occasionally a school’s own requirements mean a teacher we rate highly isn’t the one selected. It’s about fit on their side, and never our belief in you.
That’s why this system is a guide, not a set rulebook.
The Totally Teach Tier System exists to make the recruitment process more transparent and ultimately more supportive for teachers navigating the international market in 2026.
Whether you’re taking a new step into international teaching, aiming for the highly competitive top-tier schools, or exploring leadership opportunities, we hope this guide helps you better understand where you fit - and where your career could go next.
